Naturalogic Studio

GMPはGenerative Artの研究の一環として始めた個人的なプロジェクトである。最初は音楽の自動生成／演奏を目的としたGenerative Music Projectを始め、Max/MSPを用いた音楽生成アプリケーションを作成した。現在このプロジェクトは休眠状態であるが、いずれまた何らかの形で始める予定である。

次にGenerative Modeling Projectを立ち上げたが、これは従来の３Dソフトウェア上で行っていたポリゴンの編集を、設定した数式や規則の中で自動的に行うことを目的とし、パラメータによって無限のバリエーションを生成する事が出来る。この研究にはプログラム（スクリプト）によって操作できる３Dソフトウェアが必要であるが、最近の３Dソフトウェアは独自の言語やPython等によりアニメーション等のコントロールが行えるものも増えてきている。長年使用してきたBlenderもその開発当初よりPythonによるコントロールが出来るので、その機能を用いての自動モデリングを試みている。この実現のために、Dolf Veenvliet氏の協力を得られた事は非常に大きい。彼は既にこの分野で進んだ研究を行っており、Pythonのプログラミング等に多大な援助を頂いた。

また、この研究を進める上で大きくモチベーションを上げる要因になったのは、昨今の３Dプリント技術である。今までCGはモニタ画面や２次元平面の上で実体の無いものとして存在するだけであったが、それを実体化する技術が出来た事によって、今まで触れる事の出来なかったものや手で作る事が困難な物体も手に出来る時代となった。最初にテストとして出力した立体の精度の高さを見て、これはRapid Prototypingのための非常に有用なツールとしてだけでなく、オブジェ制作のためのツールとしても非常に将来性のある技術であると考えている。
